Eating while on the go is inevitable! For carboholics that means nonstop temptation from fast-food places like Chipotle, Taco Bell and Chick-Filet (to name some of my favorites). Choosing a Gluten-Free (GF) meal and dodging temptation is an art. As a general rule, I try to stick with what I know is 100% GF like grilled chicken, french fries, beef, rice, and vegetables (that’s not to say seasonings or dressings are always GF).
People with celiac and gluten sensitivity should avoid fast food altogether due to cross-contamination. Cross-contamination can occur when GF foods are cooked or prepared in the same area as gluten.
French fries are always a safe bet when your hankering for something from a drive-thru. Unfortunately, some of my favorite things like burgers and quesadillas are not GF. Sometimes I avoid my temptations by driving fast (but safely) past places I know I shouldn’t stop (**cough cough** McDonalds)!
Luckily most items that include some type of bread can be made into a salad or bowl. Always make sure to ask if any seasoning on meat or dressing contains gluten! My chipotle order usually is a brown rice bowl with grilled chicken, salsa, cheese, lettuce, and sour cream.
Like, Lili Reinhart, from the cast of Riverdale, I love my taco bell! When I am on good behavior, I order a normal beef taco with a hard-shell or a taco salad. But if I am bein completely honest, I tend to avoid Taco Bell my weakness is their chicken quesadilla and cinnamon twists (I’ve been known to cheat a time or two with those bad boys)!
Every time I go to Chick-Filet I order their gilled chicken strawberry salad with a large order of waffle fries! The salad is refreshing and tasty making it perfect for the summer months. Their fries are the best to have when you are having a particularly rough day!
Road trips can be hard to plan for, but I also try to stop somewhere that I know has at least one GF option. Diners or a GF friendly fast food place is always a good bet. When I need a snack or pick me up, I try to go to a Wawa or Quick Check. You’re probably thinking, no way there is anything GF there, well the options are extremely limited, but they do have fruit, cheese sticks and rice crispy treats (for when I need something a little sweet). Not to mention they have coffee and tea which is a must-have when traveling anywhere.
It's easy to stop at a fast-food place or rest stop and grab something with gluten. The best ways to avoid temptations is to pack your car with snacks from home (things you know you love to eat). Always be prepared to make sacrifices when it comes to eating GF.
In the end, the satisfaction of not eating that piece of bread will pay off.
