The Guide to Eating Healthy While Being GF

Gluten-Free (GF) is considered a “healthy diet,” that housewives partake in to stay skinny. For most people, being GF is based on an allergy, food sensitivity or doctor recommendation. In my case, I am sensitive to foods containing gluten and was advised to cut out gluten to reduce inflammation. Being GF does not automatically mean you lose weight or are living a healthy lifestyle. Like I have mentioned before, packaged GF foods can be high in sugar and contain preservatives. However, there are easy ways to be healthy while eating GF.

Instead of gravitating towards processed GF foods, add more fruits and vegetables into your diet. Everyone is supposed to get a minimum of five servings of fruits and vegetable per day, I don’t know about you, but I most certainly do not hit that mark! Incorporating more foods that are naturally GF is the best way to keep a balanced diet. Meals like omelets, salads and grilled chicken are naturally GF and healthy options.

Altering recipes so that they are healthy and GF friendly just takes a little extra thought. When a meal contains gluten think of ways you can replace any carbs with GF carb alternatives or cut the carbs out completely! GF oatmeal, tuna salad with avocado mayo and Turkey tacos with GF seasoning are all easy to make and also healthy meals that can be incorporated into your diet.

Although eating GF helps with some inflammation, drinking more water can also help with inflammation and bowel movements (I know I went there, but hey it's true). Carrying a 32-ounce water bottle and refilling it at least once will help you stay hydrated throughout the day. Working at a summer camp has reinforced the importance of drinking a lot of water. I drink anywhere from 32- 96 ounces of water per day, if I don’t drink enough water it can cause severe dizziness and dehydration (add on some second-grade girls and it’s a recipe for disaster).

If you’re like me and constantly on the go, you struggle to meal prep and eat at a decent time. Introducing protein shakes as meal replacements have become an essential part of my daily routine. I personally like, Lady Boss Lean Protein Powder (it's vanilla cake flavor, and yes it tastes as good as it sounds). When I don’t have time to eat lunch or it's too late to eat a full meal for dinner, I make a quick protein shake. It is filling and taste like dessert! The best part about a fine protein powder like Lady Boss Lean is that you can bake with it. I use it in my healthy pancakes (recipe below) and healthy energy muffins (recipe below).

Eating healthy does not have to be a chore, simply changing one aspect of your diet at a time can help create a chain reaction! The secret to staying healthy is trying every day and not giving up when you give in to temptation.
